ITINERARY

09:00 hrs	Meet your English-speaking guide in the hotel’s lobby. Transfer to Thonburi - the western part of Bangkok, and begins on the west banks of the Chao Phraya River. It was the capital of Thailand for a short time during the reign of King Taksin, after the ransacking of old capital Ayutthaya by the Burmese. However, in 1782 King Rama I moved the capital to the other side of the river, and called it Bangkok (Krungthep).
09:45 hrs	Visit Wat Arun, perhaps better known as the Temple of the Dawn, is one of the best known landmarks and one of the most published images of Bangkok. The tower is described by the Tourism Authority of Thailand as 104m high, while most other sources quote figures around 80-85m. It is decorated by bits of porcelain which had previously been used as ballast by boats coming to Bangkok from China, a hallmark of the reign of King Rama III. The Temple had a brief period as host of the celebrated Emerald Buddha, which now resides in Wat Phra Kaew. It is possible to walk a limited way up the (very steep) stairs of the main prang, which gives a reasonable view of the Chao Phraya river.
10:30 hrs	Transfer to visit The Royal Barge Museum, on the banks of the Bangkok Noi Canal off the Chao Phraya River, is a huge boathouse that displays eight royal barges that are the product of the finest Thai craftsmanship. The barges on display vary in size and function. The most important of all is the Suppanahong, or ’Golden Swan,’ with its figurehead prow in the shape of a huge golden swan. The barge was built by King Rama I, but then had to be rebuilt by King Rama V. Next to it is the Narai Song Suban with King Narai riding a Garuda on its prow. This barge was built to commemorate the king’s 50th anniversary on the throne. Around the sides and back of the warehouse are display cases with oars, flags and other paraphernalia of the procession ceremonies.
